This is an 8-hour SFST refresher course designed to improve the administration and overall consistency of the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Battery. Our mission is to decrease alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and deaths by promoting DWI deterrence and enforcement proficiency.

 *Successful completion of the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner Course is a prerequisite.

Kevin Ryan is the lead instructor for the Texas SFST program.  He travels all over the state to instruct Police officers, Sheriffs, Game Wardens, and several DPS offices how to properly conduct Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.  Previously, he was a training specialist with the South Plains Association of Governments Regional Law Enforcement Academy who has 35 years of experience as a Texas peace officer. During Mr. Ryan’s peace officer career, he worked for three different agencies; the Texas Tech University Police Department, the Lubbock County Water Control and Improvement District, and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2013 as a Lieutenant in the Detention Division. 

Kevin Ryan is a certified Instructor with TCOLE with over 4,000 classroom training hours, who has earned his Master Peace Officer and Master Jailer Certifications, and has attended several train-the-trainer courses including Sexual Assault Family Violence Investigator Course, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and TCIC/NCIC Associate Trainer. 

Mr. Ryan has also presented at several national conferences on law enforcement and detention, has written two articles on leadership for Key Issues, a publication of the Texas Jail Association, was on the Board of Directors for the Texas Association of Hostage Negotiators, and received several awards from the agencies he worked for, including Supervisor of the Year in 2003 for the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. 

Kevin is just graduated from Columbia Southern University earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and enjoys spending time with his family, particularly his two children and granddaughter.  Even though Kevin has a very busy schedule he is a frequent blood donor, enjoys helping with community events, and plays golf when he has any spare time.
